Monday Sports Report 3
Welcome to the Monday Sports Report. We’ve had a huge weekend in sports, so let’s get right to it.
England completed the Grand Slam, and won the Women’s Six Nations, with a narrow win over France, at Twickenham. The Red Roses were cruising 31-7, at half-time. France almost pulled off one of the great Six Nations comebacks, to snatch the Slam and the title away from England. But the perennial winners had just enough to see off a spirited French performance. Both sides are looking good, heading into the World Cup later this year. But England will feel they need to find an extra gear to win the home tournament. On the other end, Wales received the dreaded Wooden Spoon.
Liverpool emphatically wrapped up the Premier League title, by thumping Spurs 5-1 at Anfield. They have now equalled the league title record with 20 wins, in the English men’s top division.
Tadej Pogačar continued his imperious phase, by winning Liège-Bastogne-Liège. He narrowly missed out on completing the Ardennes Triple. He lost Amstel Gold, in a sprint finish, but won La Flèche Wallone. The Slovenian icon moves onto 9 Monuments.
Tigst Assefa set a world record, in a women’s-only field, whilst winning the London Marathon. The Ethiopian set a blistering time of 2:15:50, to finish almost 3 minutes clear of the field. Sabastian Sawe won the men’s race for Kenya.
Meanwhile, Arsenal women reached their first Champions League final for 18 years, by beating 8-time-champions Lyon. Barcelona cruised past Chelsea, over two legs, to take the other spot.
Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham won their third successive promotion. If they can manage it again next season, they’ll reach the “Holy Land” of the Premier League. That could make for a good documentary.
See you next Monday.
