Each Monday, we’ll bring you a useful report of the major weekend sports results.
The idea is for you to have a handy bite-sized summary of the major results from the weekend. And what a first weekend it has been.
Pauline Ferrand-Prévot won Paris-Roubaix, in an incredible return to road-racing. In the men’s race, who could beat Mathieu van der Poel, as he became only the third man in history, after Octave Lapize in 1911 and Francesco Moser in 1981, to win three editions in a row. His victory means that between he and Tadej Pogačar, they have now won 7 consecutive Monuments in a row.
We’ve had the annual Boat Race, in which Cambridge triumphed in the men’s race and Cambridge won the women’s event. Goldie beat Isis for Cambridge in the men’s reserve race and Blondie beat Osiris in the women’s version, to complete a clean-sweep for Cambridge.
Rory McIlroy ended an 11-year-wait to win his fifth Major title, to complete the career Grand Slam. He won a dramatic play-off, against Justin Rose to claim the Green Jacket.
Evie Richards became the most-decorated women’s short track cross-country mountain bike rider in history, with a win in Araxa, Brazil.
England’s Red Roses remain on course for the Women’s 6 Nations trophy, with a comfortable 49-5 win over Ireland, in Cork. They have a tricky tie against Scotland, next Saturday, and France face Italy. Should both manage to come through unscathed, it sets up a Grand Slam decider, at Twickenham, on Saturday 26th April.
Chelsea will play Manchester United, in the Women’s F.A. Cup Final, on May 18th. Chelsea came from behind to beat Liverpool, as Manchester United brushed aside derby rivals, Manchester City.
And, finally, some rather lovely news. James Anderson, England’s all-time leading wicket-taker is to be Knighted. Congratulations, Sir James.
